Trip to Europe, summer of 2002

Here are a few pictures of my trip to Europe during the summer of 2002. I have grouped them by city and placed them in the order in which I visited them. You can click on the pictures to see them in bigger size.

(Bruxelles), Amsterdam, Brugge, Paris, Figueres, Barcelona, Lisboa, Santiago de Compostela, Sevilla, Córdoba, Granada, León, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Bordeaux, Nantes, Giverny, Fontainebleau

Bruxelles

Brussels (Bruxelles) is the capital of Belgium.

Here are my two brothers, Erik on the left and Rik on the right.
This is right outside the Congress Hotel, where we spent the night (or should I say the morning since we arrived there around 5.30am).
Actually, the stay there included breakfast, which was served from 6-10am I think. So, we just stayed up abut a half hour to have breakfast and then go to bed!
The blue Peugot 206 is the car that we leased for our trip.

These are the Botanical Gardens of Brussels.

I think this is called St. Mary's church.

This is the front of the cathedral.

That's me sitting on a nice fountain near the main square.

This is part of the main square (Grand Place).
They sell flowers, paitings, etc. on the square, and there are two government buildings on the sides.

This is the Justice Palace (Palais de Justice).
It was being remodeled.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the capital of Netherlands.

This is a national monument on the main square.

This is the other side of the square.
To the left is the Koninklijk Paleis.

Just a sample of the beauty of the canals there.

I really liked these little fellows in the Rijksmuseum.
The museum has a great collection.

My brother Rik seems pretty happy after coming out of the Van Gogh museum.
The museum certainly has an impressive collection of his work.

We're big football fans (they call it soccer in the US) so we decided to check out the Ajax's stadium.

My brother Erik in front of one of the many bridges over the canals.

My brothers in Rembrandt's studio, inside his house (Museum Het Rembrandthius).
Those armours on the right were used by Rembrandt and his students as models for torsos.
There's actually a great collection of Rembrandt's etchings, as well as paintings he owned (for the purpose of later selling) from other artists.

This is the outside of Anne Frank's house.
A visit to this place sure leaves an impression on you.

Well, you probably know I love desserts, and this is one of the best ones I had there (at the Pancake Bakery).

Brugge

Brugge is a beautiful city in Belgium.

A sample of the beautiful canals in Brugge.
You can see the 83m tall Belfry (Belfort).

Another canal and some nice houses between the Gruuthuse Museum and the Arentshuis.

Another beautiful view of one of the canals.
This one comes from the Lake of Love (Minnewater), next to the Beguinage (Begijnhof).
You can also see the Church of our Lady on the back.

Inside the Church of our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekwerk).
It houses the mausoleums of Marie de Bourgogne and Charles the Dreaded.
It's tower is 122m tall.

A closer look at the Belfry.

The Burg square seen from the top of the Belfry.
The City Hall (Stadhuis) is located on the right of the square.

My brothers right outside the Groeninge Museum (Groeningemuseum).
It houses a good collection of Flemish Primitive paitings.

Erik coming into the Gruuthuse Museum (Gruuthusemuseum).

Some interesting sculptures next to Arentshuis.

Walking by the fish market (vismarkt).

Rik listening to the audio tour inside the Gruuthuse Museum.

Erik and Rik in the Astridpark.
