Trip to Europe, summer of 2002

Here are a few pictures of my trip to Europe during the summer of 2002. I have grouped them by city and placed them in the order in which I visited them. You can click on the pictures to see them in bigger size.

Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Brugge, Paris, Figueres, Barcelona, Lisboa, Santiago de Compostela, (Sevilla), Córdoba, Granada, León, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Bordeaux, Nantes, Giverny, Fontainebleau

Sevilla

Sevilla is located in the region of Andalucía (south Spain).

Part of the outside of the cathedral.
You can find Christopher Columbus' tomb there.

Part of the gardens in the Real Alcázar, a palace-fortress where monarchs used to live.

Inside the Real Alcázar, which has its share of both Muslim and Christian history.

The Baños de Doña María de Padilla, inside the Real Alcázar

Plaza de España.

The Tower of Gold (Torre del Oro), an old Muslim watchtower which was supposed to be covered with golden tiles.

Córdoba

Córdoba is also located in the region of Andalucía (south Spain).

The old city walls.

Inside the Mosque/Cathedral.
First it was a beautiful mosque, and then it was altered to accomodate for a Christian Cathedral.

A clear example of the coexistence of the Muslim and Christian influences inside the Mosque/Cathedral.

The Calahorra Tower, right across the Guadalquivir River, with the Mosque/Cathedral on the far background.

The outside of the Mosque/Cathedral.

The belfry of the Cathedral/Mosque.

Granada

Granada is also located in the region of Andalucía (south Spain). One of my god friends here in Urbana is from Granada.

This is the outside of the Alhambra , a fortress-palace.
It has four main parts: the fortress (Alcazaba), the palaces (Palacio Nazaríes, Palacio de Carlos V), the city (Medina), and the gardens (Generalife).

This is a view of the cathedral and downtown from the top of Sacromonte.

This is the Patio of the Myrtles (Patio de los Arrayanes), inside the Nasrid Palace (Palacio Nazaríes). This was where the Nasrids, muslim rulers of the 13th and 14th centuries, lived.

This is in the palace gardens (Generalife).

That's me in Generalife.

A beautiful view of the Patio de los Leones, inside the Nasrid Palace.
It has a fountain in the center that is feeding water through the mouths of 12 lions.

This is in the Patio del Mexuar, inside the Nasrid Palace.

León

My grandfather, on my dad's side, was originally from León. Therefore, we have some family there, whom we've never met before (well, my dad met them when he was younger). Actually, one of my cousins (Maricarmen) went to México in 1996 I think.
Anyway, we went there to meet them!

This is my brother Rik and me with my cousin Maricarmen on the bridge of San Marcos.

This is part of the cathedral.
It is really impressive from the inside due to the huge amount of great stained glass decoration.
It has up to three levels of stained glass windows.

The family (from left to right): Maricarmen, niece Tanya, me, cousin's wife , aunt Elena, uncle Martín, grandmother Angela, cousin Valentín (Tino) and Ana (Tino's girlfriend).

It's Rik, Maricarmen and me at her apartment.
She was a great hostess!

It's kind of a dark picture, but you can still make out the Hostal San Marcos.

This is Casa Botines, one of the only three buildings by Antoni Gaudi outside of Catalonia.
I am that dark figure up front :-)

Bilbao

Bilbao is located in the Basque country (Euskadi), in the northeast corner of Spain.
I only went to Bilbao to visit the Guggenheim Museum (Guggenheim Bilbao Museoa).

That's me outside the museum.

Pretty impressive building, ah?
The Guggenheim was designed by Frank O. Gehry. It is wrapped by caliza stone and titanium.

A closer look at the museum.
